Kathryn Hall - Material Designer

“Humans are sensitive to their surroundings, so it’s important to acknowledge this when creating textiles and space for them to experience.”

Based in London, Kathryn Hall is a material designer currently studying at Central Saint Martins. Her practice is founded on the philosophy that we can positively impact human wellbeing and our environment through thoughtful design. Always rethinking her approach to textiles, neuroscience has primarily influenced her to strive for a deeper understanding of how her processes and outcomes can impact the user.

She creates textiles that bring comfort, as well as beauty into people’s lives with the aim to potentially uplift spirits and enhance the flow of energy around the user. However, the importance of function, sustainability and ethical practices are always at the core of each collection.

While studying a degree, Kathryn became trained in the technical construct of weaving, as well as, using print and dye labs. Thoughtfully combining techniques and traditional crafts, has enabled the

production of hybrid textiles. Their original qualities are taken into new realms, by in-depth knowledge of raw materials having encouraged innovative processes to push past their previous seen limits.

Adjusting ways of developing work by using psychological theories, inform thoughtful details into the textiles and compound the overall designs practice. These designs have the capacity to evoke emotions in all people, despite language and cultural barriers, by creating a universal language through colour, texture, material.

Kathryn holds a diploma in interior design which enables her to design on a large scale without overlooking the importance of attention to detail, that comes from her textiles training. She hopes to develop and merge both practices further in the future by, creating and curating spaces, that allow environments to evolve and mold to the client.
